Advanced Anaesthesia nurse training At Davies

In January, six nurses successfully completed the “Advanced Anaesthesia nurse training” here at Davies. The Association of Veterinary Anaesthetists (AVA)-accredited course ran over a 12-month period; it consisted of a mix of self-directed and guided reading, recorded lectures, interactive seminars (some conducted via Zoom thanks to COVID!) and submission of a final case report.

The course aimed to provide nurses with the knowledge and understanding to confidently and competently manage more complex anaesthetic cases (ASA 3-5). This included discussing the relevant pathophysiology, pharmacology, monitoring and other technical challenges posed by these challenging cases. In addition, we hope that the course serves to inspire our fantastic RVNs to continue to develop their own knowledge and skills, whilst also supporting and training others within the profession.

Why did you choose to do the Advanced Anaesthesia Nursing Seminar course?
At Davies, we often witness complex cases that require the involvement of our amazing anaesthesia team. As a veterinary nurse, I wanted a better knowledge of how I could help nurse these patients on a specific case to case basis depending on their condition. As a member of the Flexi team, I rotate through wards, diagnostics and theatre which have some anaesthesia and analgesia involvement. The course provided me with the chance to improve upon the knowledge I gained when qualifying and put it into a referral setting for nursing complicated cases.

Why did you enjoy the course?
It was a very interactive course with pre-reading and tasks to research that allowed me to think deeper about specific conditions. Learning how to nurse complex cases in an anaesthesia sense pre, peri and postoperatively. Discussing cases as a group got us all learning from each other as well as from the team giving the seminars. It has given me a lot more confidence in nursing challenging anaesthesia cases (although I’ll always be grateful to have a team anaesthesia member by my side)! A really fantastic course.
