About your first visit

Some things you might like to know

Why has my pet been referred?

Your vet may be concerned that your pet has a persistent or serious problem and needs to be examined by a specialist, in the same way that your GP might refer you to a consultant at a hospital.

What do you need to bring with you for your first visit?

Please bring your pet’s medical records, laboratory test results and x-rays with you, along with any medication your pet might be receiving. Your vet will be able to provide you with copies of reports etc. To minimise the risk of cross infection please Do Not Bring your pet’s belongings (bedding, toys etc). We will ensure your pet is as comfortable as possible while in our care in our lovely veterinary facilities.

Does my pet need to be vaccinated?

There is always a risk that a contagious disease may spread where animals are housed in close quarters, so please make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date. If your dog is not vaccinated against kennel cough and time permits, please read our factsheet and check with your vet whether vaccination is appropriate prior to your visit. Information on ‘Kennel cough’ can be accessed from our website.

How much will it cost?

Our experienced staff may be able to give you a guide to the costs, we cannot always tell in advance how straightforward the treatment will be. We will, however, keep you informed with revised estimates. Fees are paid in full when treatment is completed and you collect your pet. Should fees reach a substantial amount before this point, we may request an interim payment. We accept most major credit cards.

Insurance – how does this work?

If your pet is insured you will need to contact your insurance company to inform them your pet has been referred. If you would like us to fill in the veterinary surgeon’s section of the claim form please bring it with you when you collect your pet. We do not routinely do Direct Claims.

On arrival

When you arrive for your first visit please leave your pet in the car and report to reception, where a nurse will check your paperwork.

Your consultation

  • A specialist will review your pet’s history and any test results.
  • Following a thorough examination your specialist  will discuss your pet’s problems with you, whether further tests or treatments are needed, costs and prognosis.

 

What happens next? 

  • Your pet may need further procedures and may need to stay with us for these.
  • Investigations, tests and operations take place.Your specialist will discuss the results and any further action with you.
  • Once necessary procedures have been completed, your pet will be discharged with a care plan. Your primary vet will be updated.

 

If your pet has to stay with us…

  • Our switchboard is open for routine enquiries from 8.30-5.30, but we may suggest when is the best time to call.
  • Visits to your pet can be beneficial, but we advise discussing individual needs on a case-by-case basis.
  • Your pet will have 24 hour care, with veterinary surgeons and nurses on site throughout the night.
