SPIRONOLACTONE (Prilactone®)

tabletsSpironolactone for dogs is usually used in conjunction with other drugs (i.e. diuretics, ACE-inhibitors, pimobendan…) for the management of congestive heart failure. It may also be useful in other diseases to reduce ascites ("fluid in the belly"). Recent evidence suggests spironolactone prolongs duration of life in dogs with degenerative valvular disease and it is used by many veterinary cardiologists in this setting.

What does it do ?

Spironolactone for dogs is a weak diuretic leading to a slight reduction of fluid retention. Most importantly, it counteracts a series of complex natural natural mechanisms of adaptation to cardiovascular failure. Although beneficial in the short-term, these mechanisms may become harmful for the heart in the long-term. Spironolactone acts to reduce hypertrophy (thickening) and fibrosis (scarring) of the heart.

Small dogSide-effects ?

Spironolactone for dogs may lead to an increase in blood levels of potassium (hyperkalemia) especially if used in con-junction with ACE-inhibitors. Nevertheless, these two drugs are frequently used together and hyperkalemia is rarely observed.

Monitoring ?

Blood tests to assess kidney function and electrolyte levels (i.e. potassium) will be recommended by your vet/cardiologist on a regular basis.
